Developmental song learning in the zebra finch
نویسندگان
چکیده
Developmental learning (for example, speech acquisition in human infants) takes place early in life but its effects may last the entire lifetime of the individual. Developmental learning is difficult to study because the behavioral changes involved span many time scales: The challenge is to relate the developmental parameters to behavioral changes, which can occur within hours as well as across daily cycles of wakefulness and sleep and over developmental stages. The study of developmental song learning in birds provides a unique model system for examining this process in detail.

متن کاملAnatomical plasticity in the adult zebra finch song system.
In many songbirds, vocal learning-related cellular plasticity was thought to end following a developmental critical period. However, mounting evidence in one such species, the zebra finch, suggests that forms of plasticity common during song learning continue well into adulthood, including a reliance on auditory feedback for song maintenance. This reliance wanes with increasing age, in tandem w...
متن کاملDevelopmental regulation of NMDA receptor 2B subunit mRNA and ifenprodil binding in the zebra finch anterior forebrain.
In passerine songbirds, song learning often is restricted to an early sensitive period and requires the participation of several discrete regions within the anterior forebrain. Activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors is implicated in song learning and in one forebrain song region, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (IMAN), NMDA receptors decrease in densit...
متن کاملFirst Report of Coccidiosis and Gizzard Erosion in a Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) of Iran
Coccidiosis and gizzard erosion are rare conditions in cage bird. A male zebra finch was presented with a history of watery diarrhea, anorexia, ruffled feathers, weight loss, and lethargy and died finally. Gross necropsy revealed small areas of erosions and hemorrhages on the gizzard wall. The intestine was oedematous. The spleen appeared pale and small. The testes were asymmetric.Histologicall...
متن کاملNeural song preference during vocal learning in the zebra finch depends on age and state.
The zebra finch acquires its song by first memorizing a model song from a tutor and then matching its own vocalizations to the memory trace of the tutor song, called a template. Neural mechanisms underlying this process require a link between the neural memory trace and the premotor song circuitry, which drives singing. We now report that a premotor song nucleus responds more to the tutor song ...
